Is that our wall ringing?!

This weekend, Chris decided to do a bit of winterizing around the house and install insullation in the attic.  He rented a machine, got the bags of insullation, suited up in goggles/masks and even enlisted some help (I use the work "help" loosely, and you will soon find out) from his Dad (Dave) and his 11 yr old nephew (Caleb).

Everything was going as according to plan.....Chris was in the attic using the hose to spread the insullation, Dave was at base camp putting the bags of insullation into the machine and Caleb was just inside the door of the attic listening for Chris to tell him when to tell Dave to shut the machine off.....until it happened.

Caleb vanished.

Caleb had strict orders from both Chris and Dave NOT TO LEAVE THE DOOR OF THE ATTIC.  Remember, all he had to do was sit and listen for Chris to tell him when to tell Dave to turn the machine off.  I guess that was too much for him to take in.  Well, wondering minds of 11 yr olds want to know more about the inside of attics and when no one was looking, Caleb stepped into the attic.  Not just a few steps, about 10 ft.  I should note here that Caleb had never been in an attic before.  He did not know the #1 rule while walking in an attic.....Only Walk On The Joists, Not The Floor (which is actually the ceiling of the level below).

Are you curious about what happened?  Do we have your attention?  Yep, Caleb walked onto the floor and fell through.  About 6 ft down.  Caleb yelled "CHRIS! CHRIS!"  Chris turns around and hears Caleb yelling, but he can't see him.  Chris yelled "DAD, TURN OFF THE MACHINE!"  Chris walks towards the door to the attic and sees a huge opening to a dark hole with Caleb inside.  He reaches down to get Caleb out.  Caleb is shaken, but ok.  Chris wants to get him out before he gets into anymore trouble, or falls any further.  As Chris is pulling Caleb out, the one thing Caleb asks and is most concerned about is (forget the fact that he FELL THRU THE CEILING OF HIS UNCLE CHRIS' HOUSE!) "My cell phone fell out.  It's in the hole!"  I'm sure you can imagine that was the last thing on Chris' mind, but to an 11 yr old who just got a cell phone for his birthday, it's his life.

So Caleb is out of the hole, the phone is in the hole and everyone is fine.

Are you asking yourself: where did Caleb fall through?!  Did he ruin the ceiling of a room in the house?!  Trust us, we asked ourselves the same questions. Come to find out, Caleb fell through an enclosed area above the basement stairs.  He is VERY lucky that he didn't fall any further or else he would have hit the basement steps and tumbled to the basement floor.  It could have been a lot worse.

So now to the big question: Has Caleb's phone been recovered?  No.  It's stuck in our wall and will be there for eternity.  Luckily the ringer was off, so we won't have to listen to his little friends call us or text us all day and night.

Caleb's 1st Lesson Learned:  Listen when people tell you instructions.
Caleb's 2nd Lesson Learned:  There is no need to bring a cell phone into an attic.  If someone calls you, they can leave a message.

Dave and Caleb - ready for work!

Halloween costume or adult onesie for working in the attic?

Success!  A warm winter is headed our way!

The hole Caleb made....anyone see a cell phone down there?
